In partnership with the Nanaimo Foundation and the TD Bank among other funders, Nanaimo International Jazz Festival Association president Andrew Homzy says the festival will celebrate Canada’s 150th birthday - which also coincides with the 100th anniversary of the first ever Jazz recording: on Feb. 26, 1917.

“That recording included African-Canadian composer Shelton Brooks’ now-famous jazz-classic “Darktown Strutters Ball”, says Homzy, adding that “Nanaimo has named its downtown plaza after the most famous living Canadian jazz artist in the world - Diana Krall.”

Homzy cites other factors making Nanaimo an ideal location, including our:

  • Central location.
  • Affordable prices.
  • Excellence in education, with VIU offering the only Bachelor of Jazz degree on Vancouver island; Established stars like Phil Dwyer and rising stars like Ethan Olynyk.
  • Rich cultural heritage - which includes the 1879 Opera House on Church Street to Nanaimo’s 2008 designation as a “Culture Capital of Canada”.

Homzy says the 2017 Festival events will celebrate and build on this heritage and include concerts featuring local and internationally known jazz artists. Educational presentations and related events such as a museum display have already prepared the way to the jazz festival. The Nanaimo Jazz Festival is expected to build a larger local audience for jazz music, as well as boosting destination tourism to downtown Nanaimo, through more live jazz performances.

We are grateful for the opportunity to play jazz music on the traditional territory of Snuneymuxw First Nation.
