The Nanaimo Musicians’ Association Big band (NMA Band), under the direction of Bryan Stovell, is celebrating its 50th birthday. Mr. Stovell is also a respected music educator who brought jazz performance into the Nanaimo school system and to Vancouver Island University. Many of his former students are professional musicians and music educators, the best known being international stars Diana Krall, Ingrid Jensen, and Christine Jensen.
Today’s NMA Band consists of 17 musicians and a vocalist drawing from a wide spectrum of musicians ranging from grandparents to grand children. Their repertoire ranges from pieces associated with the big dance bands of the 1930s/40s to contemporary rhythms and melodies of the 21st century.

Carmella Luvisotto, well known for her award winning jazz program at Wellington High School, follows the NMA Band. In 2005 Luvisotto first introduced a Jazz Academy at Wellington and became one of the few high schools in Canada to offer an education in jazz at the secondary level. In addition to her school band programs, she manages 12 extra-curricular band combos
Rarely do we have the opportunity to hear Carmella as a professional jazz pianist - but this afternoon, she leads a group of former students and colleagues - The Dukes of Wellington.
